Community Highlights

Tigard received an Honorable Mention due to its Safe Routes to School program, efforts to improve community connectivity, and support from elected officials for walking-related initiatives. Community highlights include:

  • An ambitious goal to become the most walkable city in the Pacific Northwest! The city is keenly aware of areas for improvement and the Mayor has even signed on as part of the U.S. DOT’s Mayors’ Challenge for Safer People, Safer Streets.
  • Ongoing efforts to improve connectivity in the downtown and create connections between the city’s 17.5 miles of greenways. To guide these improvements, Tigard has a detailed Trail System Master Plan and a Downtown Conceptual Connectivity Plan.
  • A full-time Safe Routes to School coordinator who is leading walk audits as part of the action plan process at each school. The coordinator also focuses on expanding SRTS programming at the city’s six elementary schools and two middle schools.
