Community Highlights

Arcata is designated as a Bronze-level community due to its high mode share, comprehensive planning efforts, and engineering improvements. Community highlights include:

  • Arcata’s comprehensive pedestrian and bicycle master plan, which is reviewed annually by the city’s Traffic Safety Commission and City Council. The plan includes a goal of 50% of all trips by non-motorized modes.
  • Arcata has used a variety of treatments to calm traffic and reduce vehicle speeds, including raised crossings and bulb-outs in the downtown.
  • Arcata has a small but well-connected downtown grid complete with sidewalks and links to local and regional trail systems, including ongoing work to link Arcata, Eureka and other parts of Humboldt County with the Humboldt Bay Trail.
  • According to the American Communities Survey, 30 percent of trips to work are taken by modes other than motor vehicles.
